Shompa's journey began in her early years as a Hindu girl, married at just 13. Even though she was steeped in a culture that often devalues women, she found herself deeply moved by the message of love and salvation from a traveling evangelist. This revelation was the spark that ignited her faith. Soon, she transitioned from being a passive listener to an active evangelist, leading her husband and others to Christ.
The Price of Faith
With her newfound faith came the cost of persecution. Shompa recalls a moment when her neighbors attempted to humiliate her and erase her faith by tying her up. Such acts underline the harsh realities many Christian women face in Bangladesh, experiencing discrimination for both their gender and their beliefs. However, rather than succumbing to fear, Shompa's response has been one of boldness.
Empowering Other Women
Thanks to the support of organizations like Open Doors, Shompa has been equipped to lead initiatives that uplift her community's women. With training that focuses on spiritual growth and community leadership, Shompa has helped over 140 individuals find their faith. Her ability to preach on gender equality from a Biblical perspective—declaring that “men and women are equally respected in the eyes of the Lord”—has shifted narratives within her village.
